Smiley Utility 11

Trying to convey tone in writing is not that easy. To help you get your message across while using an application like Yahoo! Messenger, the instant messaging application developed by Yahoo!, you can use smileys or emoticons. Just click the smiling icon in the conversation window and you will be presented with a list of emoticons.


The thing is that there are a lot more emoticons to use; you are not limited to the emoticons presented in the conversation window. If you go to messenger.yahoo.com/features/hiddenemoticons/ you will see that there a ton of other emoticons you could use in your conversations.

The emphasis here falls on “could use.” You could use them if you already know that the puppy dog eyes emoticon is made up of these characters :o3. Or you could use them if you constantly go to the hidden emoticons web page to copy and paste the characters that make up the emoticon you want to use.

There is a third way to go about it – you could easily use all these emoticons by taking advantage of a free application provided by HelpBytes.co.uk. The application I am talking about is called Smiley Utility and what it does is it puts hundreds of Yahoo! smileys at your disposal.

The application stays in the system tray (the icon looks like a smiley); when you click it, a list of smileys is presented to you. Click the one you want to use and it will be inserted into your chat.


The Smiley Utility features a long, long list of smileys, from Yahoo! Messenger 6 up to Yahoo! Messenger 11 which is currently in Beta. The whole list is available here. Speaking of Betas, the Smiley Utility is in Beta as well. As is the case with Betas, it may not work.
